Read below to learn how to improve your study visa application.

1) Establish strong ties to your home country

One of the main objectives of applying for any temporary status in Canada is being able to show that you have strong ties to your home country, so that you will return back to that country once you have completed your studies in Canada. This can be established by showing that you have the following in your home country:

  • Close family members in your home country that you will return to after your stay in Canada
  • Mortgage, property and/or assets
  • Bank accounts and credit cards
  • Proof of any volunteer work you do
  • Proof of any community organizations you belong to
  • Proof of any other assets you have such as a car, motorcycle, etc.
  • Other items

Please note that this list is not exhaustive.

2) Have a clear study path and plan in place

It may seem like this is a basic requirement however a lot of applicant’s do not provide a clear pathway of education in their application. You must be able to show exactly how your program of study in Canada will benefit you in your future career and educational goals.

You need to paint a clear picture of why you are choosing to study the program you are enrolling in and how that will further your career.

3) Demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to cover the cost of your studies

Meeting the minimum financial criteria is a must if you want to get a positive decision. Generally speaking, you have to show that you have at least $ 10 000 CAD plus the cost of tuition for each year that you will be studying in Canada. Please note that this amount can vary and is subject to change.

4) Apply to an eligible Designated Learning Institution (DLI) that is eligible to issue a Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP)

A very important aspect in selecting the school and program you study should take into consideration whether or not the school and program are eligible to issue you a PGWP after you have completed your studies. Generally speaking, if you complete a one-year program you will only get a one-year PGWP. If you complete a two-year program you will get a PGWP that is usually valid for up to three years.

Having a 3-year PGWP is ideal because it allows you to gain valuable skilled work experience in Canada which will help you obtain PR status in the future. You will have to make sure that your school and program are eligible for a PGWP.
